Homeschooling Interviews

A Day in the Life (Interview on Living Ma’at)

Teaching Mama InterviewI, along with several other awesome homeschooling moms of color,  was recently interviewed by Ericka Taylor, the creator of and the visionary behind the new site Living Ma’at. It was a great experience and it was nice to share my family’s homeschooling philosophy and day but more importantly, it was nice to read about other Black homeschooling moms.

One of my biggest complaints about the homeschooling community is that it is largely, what my husband and I refer to as “vanilla” in its representation. The narrative is not very diverse and there don’t seem to be many opportunities for those of us who don’t fit the mold to be heard. This, I believe, is due to the misguided notion that Black mothers and fathers are wholly reliant upon the state to help us out in our family lives be it because we are single parents, not as wealthy, or too worried about what is acceptable amongst the people of our communities. Whatever the reason, people seem to think that homeschooling is a white (and fundamentalist Christian) thing. These interviews go a long way to squashing that! Head over to Living Ma’at, as check out what we have to say about homeschooling.

That was a fabulous interview, worded beautifully and honestly. My favorite part was your explanation to your approach to religious studies–as stories similar to Greek and Egyptian myths. We feel the same way, and it’s reassuring to hear more non-theists in the homeschooling world. Keep up the good work!
