Read, My Dear (An Independent Reading List)

We sat down together and went over all the books on The Tornado’s  bookshelf this week. The goal was to create a list of 55 books that she would read this year. She has a tendency to read the same book over and over again – not necessarily a bad thing – but with the amount of time we spend in the library and Barnes and Noble I often feel like when she does that she is missing out on some really good reads.

While I think Independent Reading should not be ruined with an assignment, I also wanted to figure out if she was comprehending what she read. I’ve decided that every night we will discuss what we have read through mini book talks. I used to use book talks a lot in my classroom, and it’s a great way to share what you are reading. In fact, years ago, I wrote a few BookTalks for Pajama Mommy. For now these discussions will be private but she has expressed a desire to record them, so that may happen later….

Anyway, here is our current list.

We do this same exact thing for my 12 year old. He also has a tendency to read the same things over and over without a little guidance. I’d love to link to your post to show a reading list for younger kids if that is alright. Thanks so much for sharing!
